Secure sites will always display a padlock icon on the screen, as in the example below;
Microsoft Internet Explorer displays the lock icon in the lower-right of the browser window:

As another example, Mozilla's Firefox web Browser displays the lock icon in the lower-left corner:

Many secure sites will also display their secure certificates (called SSL certificates) supplied by VeriSign, among others:

If a website does not display at least one of these features, do not give your personal or financial information to them. You would not give your card and PIN number to a stranger on the street without checking their credentials first, and the same applies online.

No bank, financial institution or service provider such as Interswitch or ValuCard will ever email you and ask you to confirm or enter your financial or account information. These emails are always fraudulent, no matter how convincing they look. This is an example of a fraudulent email:

The clues are there - why would your bank ever require your PIN code or your personal email password? This is your private information and must be safe guarded.

Any email advising you of something that is too good to be true, Is too good to be true. You cannot win a lottery that you have never entered. Fraudsters are trying to get your account or card details so that they can steal money from you. Treat any email from a stranger or a company you are not familiar with saying that you have won a prize, asking you for your bank details or telling you to make a payment as fraudulent, and delete it.

Windows has many built-in security features that will keep your system protected against many harmful elements. Most important is to enable your Windows firewall and Automatic Updates, ensuring any new security features are available for your machine whenever you log onto the internet. 

Make sure your anti-virus is enabled and up to date

Anti-Virus software is your computer’s first line of defense against malicious software that can gather information from your computer without your knowledge. While there are some free anti-virus packages available online, it is recommended to invest in a recognized package such as McAfee (www.mcafee.com)or Norton (www.symantec.com). Look for packages that include spyware and adware blocks.

• Never write down your Personal Identification Number (PIN) – memorize it!
• Never disclose PIN numbers to anyone. 
• Make sure you sign your card on the signature panel as soon as you receive it.
• Make a record of card account numbers and telephone numbers for reporting lost or stolen cards.
• Keep this list in a safe place.
• Keep your card in view whenever you hand it to a merchant.
• Make sure your card is returned after every purchase.
• Always verify the transaction amount before signing the sales receipt.
• Do not leave cards in the glove compartment of your car.
• Never lend your credit card to anyone.
• Report lost or stolen cards to Diamond Bank immediately.
